Sculpture

My family visited California last month. One of the many things we did on our "field trip" was to take a self-guided walking tour of downtown Los Angeles. I think we walked about eight miles that day. But we saw many interesting buildings and several outdoor sculptures.
These are some pictures of a sculpture by Alexander Calder.

"Four Arches"
painted steel
built in 1974
63 feet tall

Alexander Calder was born in Lawton, Pennsylvania.

Isn't Calder the guy who builds large mobiles as well?
It seems that "Calder Mobiles" is a phrase somewhere in my memory.

    Nice pictures!

Yes, he is the same guy.
He started making them very early in his career. Marcel Duchamp named them "mobiles". when Calder began to make self supporting pieces, such as "Four Arches", Jean Arp named them "stabiles" to differentiate them from the mobiles.
